Tiny Houses: An idea for modular housing

The concept of the Build Hudson Tiny House was started as a collaboration with Greater Hudson Promise Neighborhood and designer Piper Olf, funded by Spark of Hudson to provide emergency housing for a single unhoused resident in need.

The solution had to be:

  • Affordable

  • Moveable

  • Quickly Constructed

As a result each unit was constructed under 150SQFT, built using standard building materials, and sized to fit on a small flat bed trailer for easy transportation.

While an extra small unit works well for emergency housing, we wondered about joining units for different uses. Inspired by kit-of-parts building systems, we developed a strategy for growing units through the addition of decks, roofs, and LVL framing.

The Build Hudson Tiny House incorporates high performance construction materials. In addition to creating a super tight building envelope this project offers Build Hudson employees a crash course in high performance design: WRBs (weather resistant barriers), Vapor Open membranes, service cavities, and air tight window installation on a manageable scale.
